Mama Onile is referred to by other names such as Leta, Mama La Terre, or Asase Yaa. She embodies the spirit of the Earth itself and is the deity of the grounding force connecting all living beings with the planet. She is often invoked when seeking harmony and balance with the natural world. As an Earth deity, her influence is perceived in the firmness of the ground beneath our feet and the nurturing embrace of the Earth, which provides sustenance and shelter to all its inhabitants. In this painting, she sits atop a throne of flora under “the tree of life” – the baobab tree encompassed by seven prominent Orishas who help sustain various elements of her Earth.
