The Middle Passage is presented as both a physical journey and an act of forced cultural erasure. The Orishas appear at sea, their faces veiled behind the iconography of Christian saints; a reference to the ways African spiritual traditions were concealed under colonial rule while continuing to survive in plain sight. The work insists upon this persistence: the Orishas were not extinguished, but endured through adaptation and concealment, awaiting recognition. Material and technique are integral to this narrative. 24K gold leaf creates rich, Baroque luminosity, while methods drawn from Old Master traditions, including sgraffito and hand-mixed egg tempera, produce intricate surfaces and textiles. These processes invoke both sacred visual traditions and the layered cultural memory carried across generations. The work considers transformation not as disappearance, but as continuity. Even in disguise, divinity survives.
